Far From Home, Yet Proudly Indian
Reshma Kulkarni

We had just completed our Cherry Blossom Tour and one Alpine Route Tour in Japan successfully, and the next Alpine Route Tour was about to begin on 12th May 2025. Just before this tour, in response to the devastating attack in Pahalgam on the night of 7th May 2025, the Government of India launched “Operation Sindoor.”
Everyone back home in India was talking about the war situation. We and our travellers were naturally concerned—would the tour happen? Would it be safe to fly? Then, on 9th May, came the news of a ceasefire. India had taught Pakistan a strong lesson through Operation Sindoor. The ceasefire brought relief, pride, and a deep sense of safety. With this clarity, people flew to Tokyo on 12th May, and we began our journey.
When we reached Kanazawa during the tour, something unforgettable awaited us. We were staying at a comfortable and modern hotel, whose restaurant was headed by an Indian chef, Mr. Sandip. Even during our previous month tour, he had served us wonderfully, and guests were very happy with him and his food. That evening too, as we dined at the hotel’s restaurant, the warmth of his greeting made us feel at home.
He began the meal with tasty starters that carried the familiar flavors of India. The main course followed—delicious, heartfelt, and perfectly prepared. But the real surprise came with the dessert. It was beautifully decorated, and in the middle stood a tiny Indian flag.
For a moment, silence filled the room. Our eyes shone with pride and emotion. Far away in Kanazawa, on Japanese soil, we felt deeply Indian. I know well how difficult it is to find Indian flags in Japan, especially in Kanazawa. I could easily sense the immense effort he must have taken for this gesture. It was more than food—it was a moment of belonging. This was not just cooking; it was patriotism served on a plate.
We praised and thanked Chef Sandip again and again for giving us this proud moment. And yet, the surprises were not over. He showed us the menu card he had specially prepared for Indian cuisine. Right at the top, in bold letters, it read: “Operation Sindoor.” Our hearts swelled with respect.
At that instant, we realized something important: Wherever Indians may live in the world, they carry their nation in their hearts. When India stands strong, every Indian, near or far, feels the same pride.
The Alpine Tour gave us snow walls, temples, and cultural beauty. B ut that evening in Kanazawa gave us something far greater — A story of unity, patriotism, and the spirit of India that we will never forget.
